Brela (Makarska Riviera)

Brela located on the western end of the “Makarska Riviera”, about 15 kilometers north-west from Makarska, has been known for decades as one of the most attractive seaside resorts in Dalmatia. Brela offers a coastal promenade alongside its beautiful peeble beaches which is sented by the nearby dense pinewoods. Local restaurants offer exquisite specialities of local and international cuisine. Cultural and entertainment programs are offered during the tourist season. Excursions are also regularly organized.


The Roman Empire had a settlement on this location between the 1st and 4th centery. The town of Berulia, mentioned by Constantine Porphyrogenitus (year 950), also emerged at this location. The present town was developed in the 19th century when families from Gornja Brela moved down to the coast. Organized tourism began here in 1937 when the first hotels were built. Today, Brela has a population of 1,453.

Drvenik is a tourist village on the Makarska Riviera, about 30 km distant from Makarska. Situated between the steep cliffs of the mountain Biokovo and the coast with beautiful beaches. The village is divided in two parts, situated in two valleys- Donja Vala and Gornja Vala.

1. Visit the Shell Museum, a well presented collection of 3,000 shells from all over the world located at the Franciscan monastery (Franjevacki Put 1).

2. Mt. Biokovo offers great hiking. From Makar village, take a trail to Vošac peak (1 to 2 hours). From Vošac you can continue on to the highest peak (Sveti Jure) by taking a good marked trail for approximately 2 hours.

3. Visit the Botanical Garden near the village of Kotišina. The garden can be reached by taking a trail from Makar village.

Podaca is a village on the Makarska Riviera, 17 km northwest of Ploce. The areasurrounding Podaca fatures beautiful beaches. The villageis made of three parts: Kapec, Viskovica vala and Ravanje. There are about 660 inhabitants livingin Podaca and are mainly engaged in tourism.

Podaca was first founded on the rocky slopes of Biokovo, on a defensible location. You can still see the remains of the old settlement. In the middle of the town's cemetery is the mediaeval church of St. John from the 12th century; next to it is the Baroque style parish church, built in the 18th century. On a cliff near the entrance into the village is a protruding tower with the remains of a wall, erected for the purpose of defence against the Turks in the 17th and the 18th centuries.

Zivogosce (Makarska Riviera)
